The art of Oscar Piovosi
Training and path: His training began in a photographic studio, where he developed a focus on composition and capturing fleeting moments. Later, he worked with art ceramics (1960-1975), acquiring a sensitivity to material and form. Self-taught, he began painting in 1974, focusing on the human figure. After a forced hiatus from 1982 to 2006 due to work commitments, he resumed his artistic activity with renewed vigor, exhibiting in solo and group shows since 2009.
His art is an introspective journey between reality and metaphysics, characterized by a deep reflection on the human condition and the paradoxes of contemporary society. Through figurative painting rich in symbolism and emotional tensions, Piovosi explores themes such as alienation, the inner journey, and “non-places,” creating works that oscillate between objectivity and personal emotionality.
Piovosi likes to collect, and then transfer to canvas, fragments of habitual life by dividing them into thematic cycles that explore deep themes related to travel, technology, and social criticism, frequently intertwined with a metaphysical reflection on the everyday. His canvases, made mainly in acrylic, develop into pictorial series often dialoguing with each other, among which stand out:
Travel-Mind
Explores the concept of movement and discovery. The artist connects this theme to his childhood, particularly the memory of the bridge in San Polo d’Enza, a symbol of boundary and curiosity towards the unknown. The works in this series represent a “borderless and timeless” journey, inviting the viewer to overcome mental rigidities to grasp deeper meanings.
Phone and…
One of the most critical series, dedicated to the impact of technology on human communication. Through the representation of the smartphone, Piovosi denounces theincommunicability and dependence on digital tools, highlighting how they isolate people instead of connecting them. The canvases, often displayed in contrast to other series, show an ironic but bitter approach to technological progress.
Up e Ground
Two complementary series. Up portrays people looking upward as if drawn to a random, oscillating phenomenon, a symbol of hope and transcendence, while Ground focuses on street artists (“madonnari”), with figures bent over working on the ground, a metaphor for introspection and grounding in reality.
Tasmania
This series was born out of an urgency: to give face, body and color to the often invisible stories of those who cross seas, deserts and borders in search of dignity. Tasmania is the emblem of the ideal landfall “*hasgood freshwater supplies, is in a democratic state and harbors no predators for humans…” *Cit. Paolo Giordano ”Tasmania” Einaudi Editore.
Faces of the Ephemeral
A tribute to eternal Venice, suspended between shining past and fragile present. The series not only celebrates aesthetics, but questions the viewer about the concept of identity: what is hidden behind a golden smile? The mask as liberation or prison?
1000Miglia.
Inspired by the historic motor race, the 1000Miglia series celebrates the fascination of vintage cars but also the eternal duel between past and present represented here in imaginary competitions. Tazio Nuvolari, a driving legend of the 1930s, becomes the bridge between eras: a timeless champion challenging modern cars, symbolizing the immortality of the racing spirit and technological evolution, aspects typical of the Emilian region properly called the Italian Motor Valley.
Informal
In addition to the figurative series, Piovosi has created works with an informal matrix, characterized by a free and unregulated approach. These creations, often exhibited together with the main series emphasize his versatility and desire to explore new forms of expression.
